My Tyler
From the moment I started writing the DIMILY series, Tyler was instantly my favourite character. He’s been my favourite character to write about and he’s been my favourite character to explore and develop. On the outside, he is arrogant, obnoxious and reckless, but throughout the series we quickly learn that we aren’t really seeing the real Tyler - we’re only seeing what he wants others to see. The tragic reality is that Tyler is a deeply troubled and broken young man who is still suffering from the mental impact of years of physical abuse at the hands of his father. He’s a complex character with a huge backstory, and just like Eden, I think readers are desperate to find out more about him and to understand exactly why he acts the way he does. When we discover the truth about Tyler, it breaks all of our hearts.
There is something so raw and honest about the real Tyler that I think is the reason why I, along with my readers, fall in love with him. He’s completely lost as he struggles with his own mental health and I think for a lot of people, we have our own issues and battles that we sometimes face, so it lets us relate to him. Ultimately, what Tyler really needs is help, and Just Don’t Mention It follows Tyler’s journey to this realisation.
I’ve loved writing Just Don’t Mention It and being able to let readers in to every dark corner of Tyler’s life and childhood. We truly get to understand everything he has gone through and everything he is dealing with. I’ve definitely fallen even more in love with him than I already had throughout DIMILY, and I know my readers will too!
